Beware of Jury Duty Scam in Pinal County: A Warning from PCSO

pcso-scam-alert

In a concerning trend that has emerged across Pinal County, residents are being warned about a deceptive scam that preys upon their civic responsibility. The Pinal County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) has issued an urgent alert regarding a scammer who is impersonating PCSO officials to exploit citizens.

The scam operates under a disturbingly simple guise: the fraudster contacts residents, claiming to represent the PCSO, and informs them that they have an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for jury duty. The caller then demands payment to settle the supposed fine, often requesting payment through untraceable means like gift cards.

PCSO's Official Statement

The PCSO has clarified in no uncertain terms that this practice is entirely fraudulent. "PCSO will never ask for payment over the phone or request gift cards to settle fines," the Sheriff's Office stated in a recent alert. This reminder is crucial for residents to bear in mind, as it underlines the fact that no legitimate law enforcement or government entity would ever conduct financial transactions in such a manner.

How to Protect Yourself

The PCSO has provided several recommendations to help residents protect themselves from falling victim to this scam:

  • Do Not Provide Personal Information: If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the PCSO or any other official body, requesting personal information or payment, do not comply. Legitimate agencies do not operate in this manner.
  • Do Not Meet the Caller: Under no circumstances should you agree to meet with the caller in person. This could potentially lead to a dangerous situation.
  • Hang Up Immediately: The simplest and most effective response is to hang up the phone. If the call is genuinely from a legitimate agency, they will have other means of contacting you in a more secure and official capacity.
  • Report the Call: After disconnecting, consider reporting the incident to the PCSO by calling 520.866.5111. Providing details about the call can help law enforcement track down the scammer and prevent future attempts.

The fight against scams such as these requires a collective effort. Awareness is the first step towards prevention. By staying informed about the methods used by scammers and following the guidelines set forth by law enforcement, residents can protect themselves and their neighbors from becoming victims.

The PCSO remains committed to the safety and security of all Pinal County residents and encourages anyone with information about this scam or who has been a victim to come forward. Together, we can ensure that our community remains a safe place for everyone.
